WINDSOR — Ford said today it will invest $1.2 billion Canadian ($900 million U.S.) in its plants in Canada and for a new research and engineering center in Ottawa, where it has hired former BlackBerry engineers for connected car development.
The automaker said it has already hired about 400 engineers who previously worked for BlackBerry. About 300 of those engineers are in Ottawa while another 100 are spread throughout the U.S.
Ford said its investments include $700 million Canadian ($526 million) for plants and $500 million Canadian ($376 million) for the engineering center. The investments are backed by a $204.8 million Canadian ($154 million) commitment from the Canadian and Ontario governments.
